Three Locations in Florence - Tre Luoghi a Firenze

Robert Nicholson is an English student who has been taking an Italian language course with us at the British Institute of Florence for two months. In this blog he describes three of his favourite haunts in Florence. His blog is first in English, then in Italian.

Le Giubbe Rosse
A café located in the piazza Reppublica, it was named “Le Giubbe Rosse” because the waiters wear characteristic red jackets. It calls itself “the famous literary café”. This is because a group of poets founded the futurist movement here. There is on the Giubbe Rosse’s wall an article, cut from an old newspaper, which says “Futurist Italy!”. This caffe provides a glimpse of a less famous part of Florentine history. Surrounded by the futurist story, this is the perfect place to drink coffee and read in the afternoons.

Edison
For me, Edison, also on the Piazza Reppublica, is the most beautiful bookshop in the world. A shop of three floors, it’s very open, full of light, but with walls floors completely covered by books. They have Italian books there, but also, on the top floor, many English, German and Russian books. Both classics and modern books are found here- Calvino and Dante, Rowling and Dan Brown. There is an alphabetic system that seems so confused; all the books are in perfect order. I would like English bookshops like WH Smith and Waterstones to be more like Edison.

Enoteca Pitti
A tiny wine bar opposite the Pitti Palace which serves brilliant Italian and Tuscan wines- with traditional but elegant dishes of crostini and mozzarella. There is no better place to have aperitivo or drink a glass of wine before dinner. There are only twelve seats inside this wine bar- I prefer to arrive early and sit at the bar itself.

Le Giubbe Rosse
Un caffé che si trova in piazza Repubblica, è stato chiamato “Le Giubbe Rosse” perché i camerieri portano le loro caratteristiche giubbe rosse. Si chiama anche “il famoso caffè letterario”. Questo è perché un gruppo di poeti ha fondato qui il movimento futurista. C’è sul muro delle Giubbe Rosse un articolo, ritagliato di un giornale vecchio, che dice “L’Italia Futurista!”. Questo caffè permette di dare un’ occhiata su una parte della storia fiorentina meno celebre. Circondato dalla storia futurista, è il luogo perfetto per prendere un caffè e leggere durante i pomeriggi.

Edison
Per me, Edison, anche sulla Piazza Repubblica, è la libreria piú bella del mondo. Un negozio di tre piani, è molto aperto, pieno di luce, ma con muri e pavimienti completamente coperti con libri. Hanno qui libri italiani mai anche, al piano superiore, molti libri inglesi e tedeschi e russi. Si trovano qui i classici e i libri moderni, Calvino e Dante, Rowling e Brown. C’é un sistema alfabetico che sembra tanto confuso; tutti i libri sono in un ordine perfetto. Vorrei che le librerie inglesi - Waterstone’s e WH Smith’s, fossero piú come Edison.

Enoteca Pitti
Una enoteca piccola di fronte al Palazzo Pitti, che serve i vini toscani e italiani buonissimi - con piatti di crostini e mozzarella tradizionali ma eleganti. Non c’é un migliore luogo per prendere un aperitivo o bere un bicchiere di vino prima della cena. Ci sono solo dodici sedie dentro questa enoteca, preferisco arrivare presto e sedere al bar.
